OSV Charter Rates Expect to Fall

Charter rates for offshore support vessels (OSV) will see a marginal drop in 2009 and 2010. The OSV owners and operators expect that the rates to fall between 10% to 15%. The main reason for the rates to go down is the entry of new tonnage.

Currently there are about 700 new OSVs are under construction worldwide. The Scotland based ODS-Petrodata on the other hand insists that the OSV's rates should maintain at current level. They believed that the main demand drivers are healthy especially in the oil and gas industry. Besides that, the weeding out of old tonnage should be able to bring the rates at favorable level.

As far as the oil and gas industry is concerned, the production support is expected to remain stable while construction support is expected to decrease in 2009. However, the drilling activity is still there. The Asia Pacific Region for example, is expected to contribute some 48% of the visible new platform development from 2007 to 2010. Currently, OSVs are seeing some of the highest day rates being paid for their services and this come from the oil and gas sector.
