Welcome to LOGISTICS FORUM, the official blog site for SEA EAGLE MARITIME SDN. BHD. We welcome any comments, article and information about local logistics industry especially from logistics players. |

the competitiveness of Malaysian logistics industry. The Industrial Master Plan 3 (2006-2020) has given special emphasis on logistics sector's development. If we look at 2005 GDP, transportation, storage and communication services have contributed about 8.8% or RM 23.2 billion. In Malaysia, logistics is a crucial facilitator of trade.
Freight traffic i.e. by sea, air and land have contributed 257 million tons in 2005. The Industrial Master Plan 3 (IMP3) targets Malaysian ports will handle about 751 million tons of cargo or 36 million TEU by 2020; air freight expected to handle 2.4 million tons and cargo movement by railroad about 18.6 million tons during this period.
Global trends however are affecting the Malaysian logistics. These include:
- escalating fuel prices
- credit crunch
- focus is more on security now as a result of post 9/11
- supply chain is facing greater control
- containerization of cargo movement
- more logistics companies are merging and consolidating and therefore become stronger and more efficient
- this industry seems to have too many players
- there is no proper integration among transport/haulage networks
- unclear scope of services of provided by these players
- workers and staff are not well-trained
- very difficult to get financing for expansion
- the industry itself is considered too labor intensive
