Malaysia entered its 128th consecutive month of trade surplus since November 2007 in June 2008--rose by 47.7% to RM 13.0 billion. According to Malaysia's external trade statistics released by MITI, exports in June 2008 expanded by 18.4% from June 2007 to RM 58.2 billion, while imports, in the same period, has increased by 12.1% to RM 45.3 billion from RM 40.39 billion.
The largest export revenue earner being electrical and electronic products (E&E)--at a value of RM 22.4 billion or 38.5% of total exports. During the first 6 months of 2008, total exports recorded a growth of 15.5% to RM 326.9 billion and imports rose by 8.3% to RM 259.3 billion.
Major product sectors which contributed to exports during this period were E&E products, crude petroleum, LNG, petroleum products and timber and wood-based products.
On imports, the three main categories were intermediate goods, capital goods and consumption goods.
Top 10 export destinations are Singapore, the US, Japan, China, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Germany.
