Do you know that the guy who've invented containers was a truck driver? It was in 1937 when an American named Malcolm McLean got the idea of using containers for goods. While he was sitting watching dock workers load the goods from his truck onto a ship, he suddenly thought "it would be easier to lift my trailer up and put it on board". Based on this idea he developed "intermodal boxes" (container) which could be transported using any mode of transport, rail, road or sea.
In 1956, McLean shipped 58 cargo-filled containers from New Jersey to Houston with great success and later started to haul containerized cargoes through out the United States.
In 1966, he became the first person to move cargo across the Atlantic in container-ship. Today containers are used all over the world and they've provide a cheap, fast and safe transport.
